Mika is a blue and gold macaw. She's about eight and a half years old and still a very young bird, Greg explains:
"I always tell people, do your homework! Don't just go out and do this on a on a whim and think, wow, I'd love to have a bird in my show." Greg adds, "This bird will be around longer than I will."
A macaw like Mika can live 80+ years.
In the video, Greg shares a little about the training process and runs us through a few flights with Mika. Here, Greg talks about how he trains his birds and reinforces their positive action:
"There's what's called the bridge technique. And the bridge technique, what that means is if let's say she flies around and lands on my hand and then I say, give her a treat, like a seed, she may not understand what that seed was for because it didn't come right at the moment of her landing. So what we have is a bridge to get them to understand what they did it for."
